India is one of the richest countries in the world as far as art and culture is
concerned. We have earned significant popularity in international market as well.
Handicrafts in Indian villages are of different kinds. The major types of handicrafts
are pottery, wood craft, shell craft, cane craft, ivory craft, needle craft, etc. They
are considered as major sources of income for numerous people in Indian villages.
The village fairs, melas and festivals are some of the best places for the Indian
village artisans to sell their products.
Handicrafts in Indian villages are made for serving various purposes. While some
are made for daily use, others are used for decorative purposes. Villages of West
Bengal are famous for making terracotta and sholapitha craft. The villages of Gujarat
are famous for products of brass, iron, embroidery, durries, carpets, blankets, etc.
Handicrafts in Indian villages have been being practised since ancient period. The
government is encouraging people to take up handicrafts as their occupation in the
recent years as the Indian handicraft products bring a huge amount of foreign
currency to the country.
