‘Making a wish,’ I said. dread : fear
‘Oh!’ said Grandmother.
She was preoccupied, and didn’t ask me what I was wishing for; nor did I tell her.
We never made it to England. Grandmother passed away after a brief illness in Lucknow.
Aunt Emily, in whose house we were staying before going on to Bombay to board our ship to
England, made arrangements for her funeral and for me to be sent back to Dehra. My
father’s cousin Mr John Harrison, who lived in Dehra, agreed to let me stay with him and
attend the day school in the town.
By a strange twist of fate therefore, my wish to return to Dehra was coming true after all.
I did not know if it was something to now look forward to, or dread .
