Modal verbs are also called helping verbs. Auxiliaries are used with other verbs to
form various tense of verbs, questions etc. These verbs are used to express
meanings like ability , permission , possibility , necessity etc.
Some modals (auxiliary verbs) include:
shall She shall let the dogs out.
(suggestions) Shall we go to the zoo today?
will I suppose it will rain today.
(prediction) We will not answer that.
may She may have a candy.
(possibility) He may drop in sometime.
might We might go for shopping.
(possibility) It might rain today.
can (ability) He can swim.
could He could not drop the vase.
must You must go with us.
(certainty) You must have left at 6 p.m.
should He should stay behind.
(advice) You should drive carefully.
would We would like him to go.
She would not like to go.
ought to They ought to stop making noise.
