The past continuous tense is used to describe actions that began in the past and
often continued for a short period of time after the action started.
Read the following examples:
1. Vinay was working on the computer when the bell rang.
2. The children were laughing at my cleverness.
The past continuous tense also talks about an action that was going on in the past
while another began simultaneously.
Read the following example:
I was sleeping when the telephone bell rang.
