            Multiples

In multiplication table of any number, the product of the number and a

counting number is called the multiple of both the numbers.

            Example : 16 × 1 = 16

                                  16 × 2 = 32

                                  16 × 3 = 48

In the above example, 16, 32, 48.... are the multiples of 16.

            Properties of Multiples

« A number is a multiple of itself.

« Every number is a multiple of 1.

« Every multiple of a number is greater than or equal to the number itself.

« There is no end to the multiples you can get for a particular number.

Thus, a multiple can be obtained by multiplying a number with any number or
the products of a number with the number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5........ are called the

multiples of the number. So, the multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and so on.

            Example : Is 78 a multiples of 3 ?

            Solution : 2 6

                           3 7 8 8

                               – 6
                                                          Yes, 3 divides 78 exactly.
                                  1 8
So, it is a multiple of 3.
                               – 1 8

                                   0
