Proper es of Materials
Look at the table given below carefully and understand:
                 Appearance Solubility Hardness Transparency Density

Materials look Soluble : Materials So : Materials Transparent : Float :
different which dissolve which can be Materials Materials that
from one completely in compressed or through which float on the
another. water. scratched easily. things can be surface of water.

wood does dissolve in water. Hard : Materials Opaque : Materials that
not have Insoluble : which are Materials through sink in water.

                                   dissolve e.g., Iron.
                                   in water. Translucent :
                                   e.g., sand, Materials through
                                   sawdust and oil which objects
                                                                             can be seen, but
                                   don’t dissolve in
                                                                             not clearly.
                                   water.
                                                                             e.g., wax paper.

So, it is quite clear that materials may be alike. They occupy space, have bodies and
different from one another yet they have posses mass. All the above materials are
certain similari es. In other words, they are made up of ma er.

Classification : Grouping of things into various classes based on similar properties
Matter : Anything that has mass, occupied space and can be touched
Materials : Various forms of matter— stone, clay, wood, glass, etc.

Mass : Amount of something that an object is made up of

i Objects around us are all kinds of objects and thus identifying them is important.
i Things can be grouped into various classes in view of various properties.
i Classification of things is useful in various ways.
i Natural things fall into two categories in view of life—Living and Non-living.
i Things can be placed in an orderly manner and they can be found very easily when needed,
                   out of their group only.
i Materials also differ from one another in form, colour, weights, etc. Materials may be
different from one another yet they have certain similarities.
