FACTORS AFFECTING CLIMATE (NATURAL)
You have studied that different regions on the
earth have different types of climates. The type
of climate mainly prevail on the basis of the
la tudes in which a par cular region is located.
On this basis, the earth has been divided into
three temperate zones namely frigid zone,
torrid zone and temperate zone. Frigid zone has
cold climate, torrid zone has hot climate and
the temperate zone has moderate climate i.e,
neither too hot nor too cold.

Heat Zones
Humidity, rainfall, etc. also determine climate
of a place. Besides these factors, there are
many other factors that affect the climate of a
region.

It is the height of a place above the sea-level.

That’s why the peaks of the mountains remain
covered with snow through out the year.
Distance from the Sea
The climate of the coastal areas is pleasant. It is
because of the land breeze and see breeze.
Land gets heated more rapidly than water. So,
during the day me cool air from the sea blow
to land and keep the temperature pleasant.
During the night, the land becomes cooler early
than sea water. So, during the night, the cool
air from the land moves towards the sea.
Ocean Currents
Cold ocean currents flow from colder region to
ho er region and hot ocean currents blow
from ho er region to colder region. In this way,
they increase or reduce the temperature of a
region. The warm Gulf current do not let many
harbours of the Europe freeze.
Direc on of Winds
Winds also affect the climate of a region. While
crossing an ocean, winds pick up moisture and
bring rain in coastal regions.
Relief
Relief feature of a place also determines the
climate of that place. The areas close to
mountains get more rainfall than low lying areas.
Shimla and Jalandhar are situated almost in
the same la tude. But Shimla is colder than
Jalandhar because Shimla is situated in
higher a tude.
