Educa on and research is the basis of modern
technological development. Without electricity
or other sources of energy, we can neither
impart knowledge nor we can carry on our
research work.
Agriculture
In agricultural sector, energy is needed for
running tractors, tube-wells, harvestors,
threshers, etc.
Transport and Communica on
Means of transport and communica on,
nowadays, also require huge amount of energy
in the form of fuels or electricity.
Food Processing and Storage
Food processing and storage of food in cold
storage houses uses up huge amount of energy.

Energy has become an essen al thing for us to
lead a life of comfort. We have become so much
dependent of physical comfort that we cannot
even imagine a peaceful and comfortable life
without electricity because most of the
appliances that we use for our physical comfort
require energy to run.
CAUSES OF ENERGY CRISIS
You have studied about the importance of
energy in our modes of development. But, this
is unfortunate that the energy generated in the
world is not enough to meet the every

energy crisis:
Dependence on Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels are s ll the main sources of energy
all around the world. We already know that
fossil fuels are non-renewable sources of
energy as well as they are present in limited
quan ty. We have already used up many coal
and oil deposits. The rest of the deposits will
last only a few hundred years. It is, therefore,
the supply of these sources of energy is slow
and limited which is the main cause of energy
crisis.
Ever Increasing Consump on
We see new appliances are introduced in
markets for our use. Our dependency on these
appliances is also increasing day-by-day. Since,
most of these appliances need electricity to
run, the rate of energy consump on is
increasing rapidly.
The number of vehicles on the roads are also
added in thousands everyday. New trains and
aeroplanes are also introduced every year.
These means of transport also put pressure on
energy.
Uneven Distribu on
This is another important factor responsible for
energy crisis. We already know that most of the
oil wells are concentrated in Arabian countries.
The oil produced by India is not enough to
meet its demand. We depend on these
countries for oil that is why petroleum product,
in our country are compara vely costly.
Wastage
Energy in a considerable amount go wasted
everyday in our country. It is due to the
ignorance and negligence of people. There are
