There were two brothers who were very poor. They wanted to get rich, but they
had no idea how they should go about it. They both worked for a rich man and looked
after his herd of buffaloes. Every morning they took the buffaloes into the mountains
to graze and brought them back in the evening.
One day, they were talking on the subject of getting rich. “If we take a buffalo or
two from the herd, the master will not even notice, for he has so many,” they said.
“We can sell them and become rich.” So, they hid a buffalo in a valley in the
mountains. But, the temptation became too much and every other day, they started
to hide one more buffalo. One day, the master felt that the number of buffaloes had
gone down and decided to count them. He found that seven were missing. “What has
happened to my buffaloes?” he demanded of the brothers. “They are seven short.”
The two brothers had become arrogant , thinking themselves rich as they now
possessed seven buffaloes. “How do we know what happened to your buffaloes?”
they retorted . “May be they have been
temptation : strong desire
eaten by the tigers or have fallen down the
arrogant : having sense of one’s importance
mountain. Anyway, we no longer want to retorted : answer in a sharp or angry manner
work for you so we quit, here and now.”
The brothers began to boast to everybody
that they were rich. But, people only
laughed at them. So, they
decided that they would
show everybody how rich
they were. To do this, they
invited the entire village to a
feast on the following day.
They intended to kill some of
the buffaloes and serve
everyone with the meat.
The entire village turned
up at the appointed time.
The owner of the buffaloes
was also invited and he was
sure that it was his buffaloes
that the two brothers were
