They ran back and in a voice trembling

with fear told their former master what
had happened. He was furious and

demanded that they must bring back
his mother alive. Since that was quite

             impossible, the brothers offered him
one buffalo to compensate him for the
loss of his mother. “One buffalo!”

cried the master, “Are you joking? Do
you think my mother is worth just

one buffalo? I want at least twelve
buffaloes for her.” This was quite
             impossible for the brothers. After

much haggling in which all the guests
joined, it was finally settled that the

             brothers give seven buffaloes as
             compensation.
Do you think the brothers were right?
The owner took his seven buffaloes
and returned home while the two brothers who wanted to become rich by stealing

stayed as poor as before. But, there was a difference: now they had no jobs.

compensate : give something in the place of some loss
haggling : bargain over cost of something

h You should pledge to always speak the truth in your life. You should try not to

commit any mistake. If you commit a mistake, be brave to admit it. You should
not make false excuses. A greedy person can never be happy.
