Once, two brothers, Asa and Munserang, used to run a wayside inn near a forest
path. One day, Asa went out fishing, leaving his younger brother to attend to any
customers who might come along. Some time after Asa had gone, a party of hunters
came and asked for food. “Prepare some fish curry for us, for we are hungry as
wolves,” they told Munserang.
“Sorry,” said Munserang, “I cannot make fish curry now. I have some pumpkin curry
and rice, and you can have that if you like.” “Pumpkin curry?” the hunters cried, hardly
believing their ears. “Do you imagine we can live on that kind of food? Make some fish
curry for us quickly or you’ll be sorry.”
“I shall not make fish curry,” Munserang told them, “It’s either pumpkin curry or
nothing. Take your choice.”
At this, hot words were exchanged between them. In the end, the hunters gave
Munserang a thorough beating and tying his hands behind his back, took him away
with them.

Munserang wept loudly as
he was being dragged away. His
brother Asa was retuning home
after catching a lot of fish. He
heard Munserang’s cries and
realised what had happened. So,
he made a plan. He ran into the
forest, taking with him all the
fish he had caught and climbed
up a tree, then ran back and
met the hunters.
“Please set my brother free.”
Asa requested the hunters.
“Oh he’s your brother, is he?”
they asked. “He has been very
rude to us and we are taking
