53 Bharat Ratna
Bharat Ratna is the most prominent award given by the Government of
India. Anyone with an immense performance in any field is entitled for this
admiration.
The award looks like a peepal leaf with “Bharat Ratna” printed
on it in the Devanagri script. Sun’s image is also printed on it.
The flip side of the award bears the motto and the state
emblem. The first ever Indian to receive this award was the
famous scientist, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman.
The first person to receive Bharat Ratna after death was Sri Lal
Bahadur Shastri.
Rajiv Gandhi was the youngest receiver of the award (after
death, at age 47).
Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (1987) and Nelson Mandela (1990)
are two non Indians of Bharat Ratna Award winners.
Sachin Tendulkar, one of the cricket’s greatest heroes, was
awarded with the Bharat Ratna on 26th January, 2014. He is the
first sports person chosen for this honour.
Prof. C.N.R. Rao, a well recognised
international authority in solid state and
material chemistry, who has published
hundreds of research papers, was also
awarded with Bharat Ratna Award on
26th January, 2014.
