Read the following examples:

                       2.  He has been sleeping       for two hours.

             G  denote an action that has just finished or that finished only a short while ago.

                  Read the following example:
                       Ritu has been waiting     for her parents.

             We will now study the forms of Past Perfect Continuous Tense.

             G  had been + -ing        form of the verb + ......
                  Read the following examples:

                       Positive:             1.  I had been singing    .
                                             2.  She had been dancing       .

                       Negative:             1.  I had not been singing     .
                                             2.  She had not been dancing       .
                       Interrogative:        1.  Had    you been singing   ?

                                             2.   Had   she been dancing    ?

             Past Perfect Continuous Tense is used to –

             G  denote  an  action  which  began  before  a  certain  time  in  the  past  and  was  still  in
                  progress at that time or had very recently finished.
                  Read the following example:

                       I was very tired when I came         home because I had been swimming             in the pool
                       for half an hour.

             We will now learn the usage of since         and for .

             G  We use since when we have to put emphasis on the point of time at which an action
                  started.
                  Read the following examples:

                       1.  She has been sleeping since        11 O’clock.
                       2.  I have been walking since        5 p.m.

             G  We use for when we wish to emphasise on the period for which an action has been
                  going on.
                  Read the following examples:

                       1.  They have been studying for         two hours.
                       2.  Last year, I traveled for    three weeks.

             Since and    for are used with    Perfect Continuous Tenses.
