Parts of a Sentence
The two main parts of a sentence are – the Subject and the Predicate .
The Subject is the person or thing we speak about. It can be a noun or a pronoun.
The Predicate is what is said about the subject. It can be one word or a number of words.
It contains the verb part of a sentence.
Read the following examples:
1. Sachin is playing in the ground.

2. Sitting on the terrace of my school was a huge black vulture.

Types of Sentences
There are four types of sentences. They are:
Assertive Sentences Interrogative Sentences The predicate of a sentence
must have a verb.
Imperative Sentences Exclamatory Sentences
G A sentence that states or declares something is called an assertive sentence .
· Affirmative Sentences: They have a positive meaning.
Read the following examples:
1. You should listen to her.
2. My mother bakes delicious cakes.
· Negative Sentences: These sentences have a negative meaning. No, not, never,
none, etc. are the different types of negative words used in negative sentences.
Read the following examples:
1. There are no oranges in the basket.
2. She is not a teacher.
G A sentence that asks a question is called an interrogative sentence .
· Yes / No Question: These can be answered in only yes or no. They begin with a
helping verb.
Read the following examples:
1. Do you sing?
2. Is this your bag?
· Wh Question: These begin with a question word like who, what, where, when,
whose, whom, why, etc. Some statements have to be made to answer them.
