Different Types of Silk
Silk can be categorised on the basis of species
of the moths, the leaves on which they feed on
and the way of making thread out of the silk
filament.
We can categorise silk in the following types:
v Mulberry Silk : Mulberry silk is one of the
most renowned and popular forms of silk,
par cularly when it comes to tex les.
Originated from the era of Indus Valley
Civilisa on, it is one of the exquisite silk
used in tex les. The cocoons sole source of
food is the white Mulberry plant, which
results in their white or off white colour.
These silkworms are domes cated and
reared indoors. The major mulberry silk
producing states are Tamil Nadu, Andhra
Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka and
Jammu & Kashmir.
v Tussar Silk : Tussar Silk is also known by its
Sanskrit name ‘Kosa Silk’ and produced
mainly in Jharkhand state of India. Tussar is
valued for its rich texture and natural deep
gold colour. It is obtained from silkworms
that do not breed on mulberry trees, but
breed on local trees like Sal, Arjun and Saja,
and that is why they are also called as ‘Wild

durable as compared to cul vated silk
because of its short fibre length.
The precisely finished and designer
garments produced from Tussar Silk are
world famous and are exported to various
countries worldwide including Europe, Gulf
and the United States.
v Muga Silk : It is coarse and is produced by
the moth Antheraea assamensis. These
silkworms feed on aroma c leaves of som
and soalu plants. It is commonly produced
in Assam.
v Crepe Silk : Crepe is a fabric woven with a
hard-twist crepe yarn that gives a high
number of twists per inch or with ‘S’ and ‘Z’
twists alterna vely that give out a rippled
effect.
In the process of making crepe silk fabric,
the silk yarns are highly twisted and then
weaved together to make the Crepe silk
fabric.
v Tram Silk : It is produced by twis ng two or
more threads in only one direc on.
Uses of Silk
v For women, silk fabric not only can be used
to make different types of silk dresses,
including silk wedding gowns, silk evening
gowns and silk sarongs, but also can be
used to make silk dresses like shirts, silk
skirts or silk scarves.
v For men, silks are usually used for dresses,
shirts and suits, silk es and pocket squares
for the pockets on suit jackets.
v Silk fabric may be used to make silk sheets,
silk pillowcases, table clothes, throw covers
and other home items.
