Maps
A map is a drawing of an area on a flat surface. It is useful to find and know
about a place. A map is much smaller than the size of the actual area of the
place which it depicts. A map is made according to a scale. It is the ratio of
the distance between two places as drawn on the map and the actual
distance between them on the ground. A book of map is called an atlas.
A map which shows the different states of countries is called a political
map. A map which tells us about the physical features of a place is called a
physical map.
Different signs and symbols are used on the maps to show various features
like roads, towns, cities, bridges, streams, forests, dams, wells, post office,
etc. Symbols are drawn in different colours to show the different landforms
and water bodies. Some symbols are given in the table below:
