Words which are used to describe a noun – how much, what colour, etc. in a
sentence are called adjectives .
Read the following examples:
1. Anu likes spicy food. (What kind of food?)
2. I gave her a red rose. (Rose of what colour?)
3. Alok won three prizes. (How many prizes?)
Adjectives are usually placed before the nouns they describe. But sometimes they
may be placed after the nouns as well.
Read the following examples:
1. We found an empty room . (adjective before noun)
2. The room was empty . (adjective after noun)
There are six kinds of adjectives.
Adjective of Quality Adjective of Quantity Adjective of Number
Demonstrative Adjective Interrogative Adjective Possessive Adjective
G Those adjectives which tell us what type of a person he/she is or what type of a
thing it is are called adjectives of quality .
Read the following examples:
1. It is a tall building. 2. He is an honest man.
G Adjective of quantity are adjectives which tell us how much or how many of
the noun it is describing.
Read the following examples:
1. I need a little sugar. 2. The beggar asked for some food.
G Adjective of number shows how many person or thing is meant. It asks the
question, how many?
Read the following examples:
1. There are six glasses on the rack. 2. There were three men standing.
Adjective like first, third, tenth, which are derived from numbers, are also
called adjectives of number. Such adjectives show in what order a person or
thing stands. Therefore, they are also called ordinal adjectives .
