2. Exclamatory : What a beautiful girl!
Assertive : She is a beautiful girl.
We will now learn to interchange simple and complex sentences.
While changing a simple sentence to a complex sentence, a word or a phrase is changed
into a clause using a subordinating conjunction like which, who, when, that, if, as,
because, although, etc.
Read the following examples:
Simple : He proved his innocence.
Complex : He proved that he was innocent.
When a complex sentence is changed into a simple sentence, a subordinate clause is
changed into a word or a phrase.
Read the following examples:
Complex : I saw a soldier who was wounded.
Simple : I saw a wounded soldier.
Let us now learn to interchange simple and compound sentences.
While changing a simple sentence to a compound sentence, a word or a phrase is
changed into a clause using a coordinating conjunction like or, but, and, for, etc.
Read the following examples:
Simple : Being ill, he didn’t attend the meeting.
Compound : He was ill and didn’t attend the meeting.
When a compound sentence is changed into a simple sentence, a coordinate clause is
changed into a word or a phrase.
Read the following examples:
Compound : He must walk fast or he will not reach on time.
Simple : He must walk fast to reach on time.
A. Change the following exclamatory sentences into assertive sentences.
1. Oh, that I was a fairy!
