Compound Sentence = main clause + connective + main clause

A compound sentence is sometimes called a double sentence . Since the clauses make
complete sense on their own, they are called principal or main clauses .

             Complex Sentence
These have one independent clause connected to one or more than one dependent
             clause.

             Read the following example:
The students are studying because they have their exams next week.

There are two clauses in the above sentence. They are –
                   1. The students are studying.

                   2. Because they have their exams next week.
The first clause makes complete sense and is capable of standing on its own as an

independent sentence. This clause is called the principal or main clause .

Complex Sentence = main clause + connective + subordinate clause

The other clause makes sense, but not a complete sense.
Moreover, it cannot stand on its own as an independent
sentence. To convey its full meaning, it has to be joined

             to the first clause.
