G ‘The number’ is singular so it will take singular verbs, while ‘A number’ means many
so it will take plural verbs.
Read the following examples:

2. A number of players were taking part in the competition.
G Generally ‘None’ takes singular verb but in Modern English ‘None’ takes plural verb.
Read the following examples:
1. None but I was in the class.
2. None were injured in the accident.
G When nouns, whether singular or plural, are used with ‘nothing but’ before them,
the verb will be singular.
