G Two or more than two subjects joined together take a plural verb.
Read the following examples:
1. I and my friends were in the same train.
2. Apple and papaya are healthy fruits.
G Two singular subjects denoting the same person / thing take singular verb.
Read the following examples:
1. The mill owner and manager was in the factory.
2. Rice and curry a delicious dish.is
G In two subjects joined by ‘as well as’, the verb will be according to the first subject.
Read the following examples:
1. The teacher as well as the students was in the auditorium.
2. You as well as I were in the playground.
G If two or more than two singular subjects are joined by ‘and’ whereas first subject has
each or every before it; the verb will be singular.
Read the following examples:
1. Each of these boys given a burger.is
2. Every one of those girls was praised.
G If singular and plural subjects of sentence are joined by either – or, neither – nor; or
and nor, the plural subject is kept near the verb and it will take plural verb.
Read the following examples:
1. Neither the teacher nor the students were in the class.
2. Either the teacher his students or are hardworking.
G Some collective nouns are used with singular verbs.
Read the following examples:
1. The council was held in the last month of this year.
2. The jury has given its verdict against the case.
G Nouns like news, economics, physics, politics, mathematics, wages, innings, alms
seem to be plural but these mean singular; so all these take singular verbs.
Read the following examples:
1. Chemistry an interesting subject.is
2. First innings was not played well.
G Nouns like binoculars, trousers, scissors, glasses, shoes and measles, etc. take plural
verbs.
