8. Could: It is the past tense of ‘can’. It is used to express ability, power and a
polite request in the past.
Read the following examples:
· He could run fast when he was young.
· Could I talk to the Principal, please?
9. Must: It refers to the present or future tense. It is used to express necessity,
conclusion, prohibition and determination.
Read the following examples:
· You must have a passport to go abroad.
· You must speak politely to be liked by everyone.
10. Ought to: It is always followed by ‘to’. It is used to express moral obligation and
duties.
Read the following examples:
· I ought thank him for his generosity.to
· We ought to behave well with everyone.
11. Need: It is used in negative or interrogative sentences. It is used to express
necessity or compulsion.
Read the following examples:
· They didn’t need to worry for anything.
· I need to work harder to meet my expenses.
12. Used to: It is used to express ‘habitual actions’ in the past. It is not used in the
present tense form.
Read the following examples:
· I used to fight a lot with others, now I don’t.
· I am used to sleeping in a calm and clean room.
