Read the following examples:
· He will talk to you at 5:00 p.m.
· I will never go there again.
2. Would: is the past tense of ‘will’. It is used to express a polite request in the
present, determination, wish, past habit, willingness in the past and condition.
Read the following examples:
· He would not shout in the classroom.
· I would like to read that book.
3. Shall: It is used with the first person pronoun to express the simple future tense.
It can also be used with the second and the third person pronouns to express
promise, threat, command and determination.
Read the following examples:
· She shall be punished for coming late to the school.
· He shall speak the truth, whether he likes it or not.
4. Should: It is the past tense of ‘shall’. It is used to denote disapproval, to express
advice, duty and future possibility.
Read the following examples:
· You should not put your feet on the table.
· You should check your work before submitting it.
5. May: It is used to give or take permission, to express a possibility, wish or a prayer.
Read the following examples:
· May I sit with you?
· We may go out for dinner tonight.
6. Might: It is the past tense of ‘may’. It is used to express a possibility in the past
and suggestion.
Read the following examples:
· She might be at school by now.
· If you have sensitive teeth, you might consider using a special toothpaste.
7. Can: It is used to express ability or power and show permission and possibility.
Read the following examples:
· She can dance very well.
· Can I go home now?
