Objective : To make familiar with calendar pattern

Materials Required : Calendar

Preparation : Form pairs in class.

Steps :

1. One month will be choosen by one student.

2. On that calendar month, the student will then choose any 3 × 3 grid (i.e, 9
dates) and draws a grid around it.

3. To find the total of all the numbers in that box, the other students will use the

following shortcut method :

a. Add 8 to the smallest number in the box (i.e, 4 + 8 = 12 in this example).

b. Multiply the answer by 9. This is the total of all the numbers in the box
(i.e, 12 × 9 = 108).

Record of the Activity :

Smallest number in the box Total of all numbers

4 (4 + 8) × 9 = 108

Check the total : 4 + 5 + 6 + 11 + 12 + 13 + 18 + 19 + 20 = 108
