                a. 6 3 4 2 8

               b. 4 2 8 6 9

These numbers can be read as :

            a. Sixty three thousand four hundred twenty eight

            b. Forty two thousand eight hundred sixty nine

            Expanded Form

If we arrange 24568 in the place value chart, we see that the numeral contains

            24 thousands, 5 hundreds, 6 tens and 8 ones.

            Therefore, it can also be written as 20000 + 4000 + 500 + 60 + 8.

A number can be expressed in expanded form in any of the given three
            methods :

            « 24568 = 2 ten thousands + 4 thousands + 5 hundreds + 6 tens + 8 ones

            « 24568 = 2 × 10000 + 4 × 1000 + 5 × 100 + 6 × 10 + 8

            « 24568 = 20000 + 4000 + 500 + 60 + 8

Example : Write the following numbers in expanded form.

                            a. 23456 b. 35463

            Solution :

            a. 23456 = 2 ten thousands + 3 thousands + 4 hundreds + 5 tens + 6 ones

                                                                Or

                            (2 × 10000) + (3 × 1000) + (4 × 100) + (5 × 10) + 6

                                                                Or

                            20000 + 3000 + 400 + 50 + 6

                                                                 Mathematics-4 8
