P. 179
Line : A line is defined as a line of points that extends infinitely in two directions. It has
one dimension, length. Points that are on the same line are called collinear points.
A B
A line generally means a straight line. This is read as line AB and written as AB. The
arrow on both sides implies that it extends both sides infinitely.
A B
Line segment : A part of a line that has defined end points is called a line segments. AB
is a line segment. It is written as AB.
A B
Ray : If we extend a line segment in one direction infinitely, we get a ray. A ray has one
end point and no definite length.
A is the end point of ray AB and B is any other point on it. We write this ray as AB and
not as BA.
A B
Carry On
Write the names of lines, line segments and rays in this figure.

Relationship Between Points and Lines
How many lines can be drawn through a point Z ?
We can draw an infinite number of lines passing through this point
Z
Lines that contain the same point are known as concurrent lines .
One and only one line can pass through two points.
