Learning Objective : To understand fraction as a part of whole.

Pre-requisite : Knowledge of fractions , , , etc.

Materials Required : A few paper strips of uniform width and circular cutouts of paper of
same size.
Procedure (a) :
Steps :
1. Take a paper strip (say 10 cm long approx). Fold it in the middle so that the two parts

overlap each other. Unfold and colour one part. Each part represents half or of the

whole strip.

2. Take another strip and fold it as in Step 1 and again fold it in the middle so that the two
parts of the folded strip are exactly equal. Open the folds again.
Shade or colour one part.
(b)
3. Take a strip and fold it in three equal parts, unfold it.
4. Shade/Colour one part.
(c)
5. Similarly take one more strip and fold it into 5 equal parts and shade one of the parts.
Observation :
i. Shaded/coloured part in (a) represents the fraction .....................
ii. Shaded/coloured part in (b) represents the fraction .....................
iii. Shaded/coloured part in (c) represents the fraction .....................
iv. Shaded/coloured part in the figure obtained in Step 5 represents the fraction .....................
