Independence Day
On 15th August every year,
Independence Day is
celebrated. On this day, in
1947, India became free
from British rule. The Prime
Minister of India hoists the
National Flag at the Red Fort
and addresses the Nation.
Gandhi Jayanti
Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on 2nd October every year. On this day, in
1869, Mahatma Gandhi was born. He was a great freedom fighter. He is
called the Father of the Nation . Gandhiji celebrates his birthday with
our second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. His birthday is also
celebrated.
Religious Festivals
Dussehra
Dussehra is an important Hindu festival.
It is celebrated every year with great
pomp and show in honour of Lord Rama’s
victory over the demon king Ravana.
The story of Rama’s life is specially
enacted out in Ramlilas and other
theatrical performances which are held Dusshera
for ten days. On the tenth day, effigies of Ravana and his brother
Kumbhakarna and son Meghnatha are burnt to mark the end of evil.
Diwali
Diwali is called the Festival of Lights . People clean their homes and
shops and decorate them with earthen diya and small electric bulbs. On
Diwali night, they light oil lamps, candles and bulbs. People exchange
