Landfill
A landfill is a low lying area where garbage is deposited and then buried.
Once, the landfill is filled, it is covered with soil. It is a very safe means of
disposal of wastes.
Incineration
Another way of disposal of wastes is by
dumping it at one place and then burning
it. This is called incineration. However,
incinerators cause air pollution due to
release of smoke.
Compost Pit
In villages, deep pits are dug to dump
the household waste in it. This waste is
often covered with soil. After many
days, this waste turns into manure. This
method of waste disposal is known as
composting. It is a good method to
dispose off biodegradable wastes.
Urban and Rural Wastes
People living in urban areas earn more money than the people living in rural
areas. As a result, urban people spend more on food, clothes, electronic
goods, entertainment, etc. This leads to generate of more waste in towns
and cities.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Non-biodegradable wastes cannot be disposed off, so we
should try to control its production and try to manage it by
practising the three R’s. - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Reduce
The first and the foremost step should be reduction of waste. If we generate
less waste, half of the problem is solved. For this, we should use cloth or jute
bags instead of paper or plastic bags. Also, we must avoid using plastic
boxes, metal foil and plastic bottles.
