Types of Wastes
There are two types of wastes generated – Biodegradable and Non-
biodegradable.
The biodegradable wastes can be changed into
compost, as they get decomposed and get
changed into manure. These degrade break down
and mix with the soil. Vegetables and fruit peels,
natural fabrics, paper, leaves, human and animal
excreta are biodegradable wastes. They do not
cause much harm to the environment.
The non-biodegradable wastes cannot be
decomposed. These wastes remain in the
environment as such and cause harm. Things
made of plastic, polythene, glass and metals fall
under this category.
The two types of wastes should be handled
differently to reduce their harmful effects on the
environment.
We follow a colour code for the segregation of wastes.
g Green bin for biodegradable wastes.
g Blue bin for non-biodegradable wastes.
Disposal of Wastes
We collect the household wastes in a dustbin. The garbage collector collects
the garbage from our homes and dumps it in the community dustbins of
that area. Then, the trucks of local municipal authorities pick up this garbage
and take it for disposal. Here are some methods to dispose wastes.
Open Dumping
In this method, the garbage is thrown
openly to decompose with the action of
air, water and sunlight. Thus, heaps of
garbage are made which pollute the
environment.
