Floating Plants
Plants that float on water are
called floating plants. These are
small in size. They have spongy
stems, air filled leaves and stems.
Their roots also float and are not
fixed to the soil. For example,
Duckweed and Water Hyacinth. Duckweed Water Hyacinth
Fixed Plants
The aquatic plants that remain fixed
at a place as they have roots fixed
to the soil under water are called
fixed plants. They have big round
leaves that float over the surface of
water. The stems are hollow and the
leaves are broad and floating.
Stomata are present on the upper Water Lily Lotus
surface of the leaves. For example,
Water Lily and Lotus.
Underwater / Submerged Plants
Plants that grow under the water
are called underwater or
submerged plants. These plants
are fixed to the bottom of the water
with their roots. They have narrow, Hydrilla Vallisneria
thin leaves. Stomata are absent in these plants. For example, Hydrilla and
Vallisneria.
Aquatic Animals
Like plants, some animals also live in water. Animals that live in water are
called aquatic animals .
Different kinds of fishes and several other animals like crabs, dolphins,
whales and seals live in water.
