A noun is a word that denotes a person, an animal, a place, a thing or
an idea.
Underline the nouns in the following sentences and say whether they
are common, proper, material, collective or abstract nouns.
1. Clothes are made of cotton, wool and silk. ________________
2. Without health, there is no happiness. ________________
3. The people who live in Holand are called Dutch. ________________
4. There was large crowd in the street. ________________
5. The jury found the prisoner guilty. ________________

Types of Nouns
There are five types of nouns. They are:
Proper Noun Common Noun Material Noun
Collective Noun Abstract Noun
G Proper Noun is the name of a particular person, place, animal or thing. It begins with
a capital letter.
Read the following examples:
1. The Taj Mahal is in Agra .
2. January is the first month of the year.
G Common Noun is the name given in common to every person, place, animal or thing
of the same kind.
Read the following examples:
1. The people were shouting slogans on the road.
2. My dog won’t stop barking.
