There are two ways of reporting the words of a speaker– by quoting

actual words and without quoting his actual words.

                                                                                Raghav told me
Hi Karan! I am that he was also
going to market going to buy one.
                    to buy a bouquet.

                           But, he said
                          “I am going to
                            the park.”

Direct speech refers to the actual words of the speaker as spoken by him/her.

In indirect speech , someone else repeats what the speaker had originally said, but
without using the speaker’s actual words.

             Read the following examples:
Rani said, “We have to return home before it gets dark.” (direct speech)

Rani said that they had to return home before it got dark. (indirect speech)

When the exact words of the speaker are reproduced, the entire speech is put within
inverted commas. This speech is called reported speech .
             Read the following examples:

I said, “My mother cooks well.”

I said that my mother cooked well.
The verb said which introduces the reported speech is called the reporting verb.
Generally, a comma or a colon separates the reported speech from the reporting verb.
