4. Some Other Changes
G In direct speech, expressions denoting nearness of time or place are replaced by
corresponding expressions denoting distance, if the reporting verb is in past
tense.
Read the following examples:
Direct Speech Indirect Speech

now then
ago before
today that day
yesterday the day before / the previous day
tomorrow the next day / the following day
next week / year, etc. the following week / year, etc.
last week / year, etc. the previous week / year, etc.
5. Questions
In direct speech, the reporting verb ‘said’ is changed into ask , inquire or demand in
indirect speech.
If the direct question has yes or no for an answer, we use whether or in indirect if
speech.
Read the following examples:
· Direct: I said to her, “Where do you stay in Delhi?”
Indirect: I asked her where she stayed in Delhi.
· Direct: Sameer said to Puneet, “How often do you go to the temple?”
Indirect: Sameer asked Puneet how often he went to the temple.
6. Commands and Requests
In direct speech, when a sentence gives commands or requests something, the
reporting verb is changed into request , advise , order , command , beg , etc. in indirect
speech.
Read the following examples:
· Direct: He said to her, “Be careful.”
· Indirect: He advised her to be careful.
