G  It is used before the word one        as it begins with the consonant sound of ‘wa’.
                  Read the following examples:

                       a one-rupee coin, a one-eyed man, a one-way road, etc.

             Uses of An

             G  It is used before abbreviations, if consonants begin with a vowel sound.
                  Read the following examples:

                       an M.B.A., an M.P., etc.
                  In the above mentioned examples, the consonant ‘m’ is pronounced as ‘em’, so it
                  begins with a vowel sound.

             G  It is used before a word beginning with a vowel.

                  Read the following examples:
                       an orphan, an ink-pot, an igloo, etc.

             G  It is used before a word beginning with a consonant ‘h’ which is not pronounced
                  and having a vowel sound.

                  Read the following examples:
                       an hour, an honest man, an honourable person, etc.

             Uses of The

             ‘The’ is called the definite article    because it points out some particular persons or things.
             It is used with singular countable, plural countable and uncountable nouns.
             It is used –

             G  before a noun when we want to make it particular.
                  Read the following example:

                       This is the  book you gave me on my birthday.

             G  with a common noun when that noun represents the whole class.
                  Read the following example:

                       The cow is a holy animal.

             G  with the things which are only one of its kind.
                  Read the following examples:

                       the Sun, the Moon, the Sky, the Earth, etc.
             G  with the superlatives.

                  Read the following examples:
                       the brightest stars,  the most beautiful painting, etc.
