Word Problems

There are four steps to solve word problems. These are –

« Read the problems « Convert the problem into numbers and operations

« Solve « Give answers

Example : There are 32462 men, 12345 women and 24021 children in a

village. Find the total population of the village.

Solution : No. of men in the village = 32462
1
No. of women in the village = 12345 3 2 4 6 2

No. of children in the village = 24021 + 1 2 3 4 5

Therefore, the total population of the village is + 2 4 0 2 1
32462 + 12345 + 24021
6 8 8 2 8
= 68828

Example : In 2016, three sugar mills produced 28537, 41089 and 9805
bags of sugar respectively. How many bags of sugar were

produced by these mills ?

Solution : Bags of sugar produced by the 1st mill = 28537

Bags of sugar produced by the 2nd mill = 41089

Bags of sugar produced by the 3rd mill = 9805

+ 4 1 0 8 9
+ 9 8 0 5

7 9 4 3 1

Therefore, the total number of bags of sugar produced in 2016

= 28537 + 41089 + 9805 = 79431 bags.
