Properties of Addition
Property 1 : Changing the order of the two addends does not change the sum.
4 + 2 = 2 + 4
This is known as the order
property of addition.
4 + 2 = 6 2 + 4 = 6
Example : Add 25967 and 12379.
Solution : a. 2 5 9 6 7 b. 1 2 3 7 9
+ 1 2 3 7 9 + 2 5 9 6 7
3 8 3 4 6 3 8 3 4 6
\ 25967 + 12379 = 38346 \ 12379 + 25967 = 38346
Property 2 : The sum of any number and 0 is that number itself.
0 + 5 = 5 + 0 = 5
0 + 5 = 5 5 + 0 = 5
This is known as the additive property of zero .
Example : Add 25678 and 0.
Solution : a. 2 5 6 7 8
+ 0
2 5 6 7 8
\ 25678 + 0 = 25678
