11 Volume and Nets
The amount of space occupied by any object or solid figure is called its volume. Volume is
the quantity of three-dimensional shapes. To measure the volumes, we need to know the
measure of 3 sides. Since, volume involves 3 side, so it is measured in cubic units.

Surface like the page of a book, blackboard, etc. are called plane surface. They do not have
any volume but have only area.
Unit of Volume
A solid has length, breadh and height all these three dimensions. To find the volume of
the solid, the unit of its length is multiplied three times. Thus, the unit of volume is in
the form of cubic unit of the dimensions.
The space covered by a 1 cm square is used as a unit for measuring area. It is derived
from the unit of the length, i.e. cm.
