A mm cube is used to measure the volume of very small objects. A m cube is used to
measure the volume of large objects.
We can find the volume of a solid by fitting unit cubes in the solid and counting them.
8 cubic cm 9 cubic cm
We use a cube to measure volume because it is the only 3 dimensional measure which
can fill available space without leaving any empty space.
Let us find the volume of this box by filling it with cm cubes.
Put in 1 cm cubes to fit one layer and count them. There are
10 rows with 4 cubes in each row. So, there are 40 cubes in one layer. There are four
layers of 40 cubes each. There are 160 one-cm cubes filling the box.
Since the box can hold 160 one-cm cubes, the volume of the box is said to be 160 cubic
centimetres.
The unit of measurement of volume is cubic centimetres and is written as cu. cm. Volume
of the shoe box = 160 cu. cm.
1 mm cubes give the volume in cubic millimetres and is written as cu. mm.
1 m cubes give the volume in cubic metres and is written as cu. m.
