Computer once meant a person who did computations, but now the term almost

universally refers to automated electronic machinery.
Being a modern day kid you must have used, seen or read about computers. This is

because they are an integral part of our everyday existence. Be it school, banks,
shops, railway stations, hospitals or your own home, computer are present
everywhere, making our work easier and faster for us. As they are such integral parts

of our lives, we must know what they are and how they function.

Word ‘computer’ comes from the term ‘compute’, which means to calculate.

Let’s start with defining the term computer formally.

A computer is a machine or device that performs processes, calculations and
operations based on instructions provided by a software or hardware program. It is
designed to execute applications and provides a variety of solutions by combining

integrated hardware and software components.

A computer has the following characteristics.
8 No IQ : Computers can’t think themselves. They do what instructions they get.

Though efforts are being made to develop computers with artificial intelligence
which can be learnt from their experience.

8 Speed : A computer is a very fast calculating device.
8 Accuracy : A computer is highly accurate and its accuracy is consistent.
