Vegetative Propagation
Some plants grow from the body parts of the
mother plant like root, stem or leaf. This type of
reproduction is called vegetative propagation .
From Roots
Carrot and radish plants grow from the roots of
Radish and Carrot
the mother plant.
From Stems
Potato and ginger are plants that grow as
underground stems. New plants can also be
obtained from the stem cutting like rose plant.
From Leaves Potato Buds
Some leaves like that of Begonia and
Bryophyllum grow buds on their leaf margins.
These grow into new plants.
Structure of a Seed
Seed coat is the outer covering. It protects the
Bryophyllum baby plant inside the seed. The coat has a hole.
Seed Coat This hole allows water to enter the seed.
Baby Below the seed coat are present two seed leaves
Plant or cotyledons . Cotyledons store food for the
Scar baby plant. Embryo is the tiny baby plant that
grows between the seed leaves.
What do Seeds Need to Grow?
Seed Leaves
Structure of Seed The process by which a seed grows into a
seedling is called germination . When seeds get
enough water, air and warmth, they grow into
new plants. Water helps to soften the seed coat.
It also changes the food stored in the seed into
a soluble form so that it can be used by the
baby plant. Air is essential for plants as they
require oxygen to breathe.
