P. 16

A sentence can be divided into two parts – Subject and Predicate .

             Subject
That part of the sentence which names what the sentence is about is the subject .

             Read the following examples:

             1. Monika is writing a story.

             2. Children are playing in the park.

In the first sentence, the action is carried out by
Monika. So, Monika is the subject.

In the second sentence, the action is carried out by
the children. So, the children is the subject.

             Subject in an Imperative Sentence
In an imperative sentence, the subject is always you , but it is not stated, it is implied.

             Look at this sentence:

             G Brush your teeth.

It is an imperative sentence. Can you guess the subject in this sentence?

This sentence actually means– you should brush your teeth. But you is not stated. It
             is understood.

             Similarly:

Stand up actually means you stand up.
Wait outside actually means you wait outside.

In both these sentences, the subject is you though it is implied and not stated.

Every complete subject contains a simple subject. The simple subject, which is a
noun or pronoun, is the most important word in the complete subject.

             Read the following examples:

             1. A loud argument .

             2. The newspaper article .
3 We listened to the radio at the beach.

             4. Sausage and mushrooms are Leo’s favourite pizza toppings.

                                                                   16
