Types of Participles
There are three types of participles. These are:
Present Participle Past Participle Perfect Participle
G Participles that end in -ing represent an action that is going on or is incompleted are
called present participle .
Read the following examples:
1. I saw a man carrying a heavy box on his head.
2. The screeching car came to halt.
G Participles that end in -ed, -d, -en, -t or -n represent a completed action or state of
the thing are called past participles .
Read the following examples:
1. The broken vase was thrown.
2. The arrested person was a thief.
G Participles that take the form having + past participle represent an action completed
at some past time are called perfect participles .
Read the following examples:
1. Having slept late, he could not get up early in the morning.
2. Having lost control, the driver collided with a pole.
G The word which is like a verb, but does the function of a noun is called a gerund .
Read the following examples:
1. I like reading books.
2. Walking is a good exercise.
A. Join the following pairs of sentences with the suitable infinitives.
1. I met a child. He was playing all alone. ___________________________
2. Mother heard the news. She stood up. ___________________________
3. The storm was powerful. It uprooted many trees. ___________________________
