Addition and Subtraction of Length

Example : A room is of 6 m length and 4 m breadth.

a. Find the sum of its length and breadth.

b. Find the difference between length and breadth. 6 m

Solution : a. Sum = 6 m + 4 m = 10 m or + 4 m

\ The sum of length and breadth is 10 m.

b. Difference = 6 m – 4 m = 2 m or
– 4 m
\ The difference between length and
2 m
breadth is 2 m.

Example : There are two line segments. One is 8 cm long and other is 5 cm

long.

a. Find the total length of both the line segments.

b. Find the difference between the lengths of the line segments.

Solution : a. Total length = 8 cm + 5 cm = 13 cm 8 cm

Therefore, total length of both the + 5 cm

line segments is 13 cm. 13 cm

b. Difference = 8 cm – 5 cm = 3 cm 8 cm

Therefore, difference between the – 5 cm

line segments is 3 cm. 3 cm
