Time to the Exact Minute

Let us look at the face of a clock. There are small lines or dots between two

numbers. Between the numbers 1 and 2, there are 4 lines which divide the

space between 1 and 2 into 5 equal parts. Similarly, the space between 2
and 3 is also divided into 5 equal parts by 4 lines.

In the clock given below, the minute hand is at 9 and the hour hand is

            between 2 and 3. So, the time is 2 : 45.

                                            12
                                      11 1

                                  10 2

                                9 3

                                  8 4

                                       7 5
                                             6
                                                                     2 : 45

You have learnt how to count minutes in fives. So, when the minute hand is
at 9, it is 45 minutes past the hour and when the minute hand is at 10 it is 50

minutes past the hour. So, between 9 and 10 will lie the minutes 46, 47, 48

and 49. So, if the minute hand is at the first line, it is 46 minutes past the

hour. If it is at second line it is 47 minutes past and so on.

Reading Time to 5 Minutes Corrections

In this clock, the hour hand is at 5.

The minute hand is at 12.

            The time is 5 o’clock.

            We write it as 5:00.
