Property 4 : Multiplicative Property of Zero

The product of a number and 0 is always 0. This is known as
Multiplicative Property of Zero.

i.e., a × 0 = 0 × a = 0

Example : Solve : 89 × 0, 653 × 0, 2249 × 0 and 93 × 0

Solution : 8 9 6 5 3 2 2 4 9 9 3

× 0 × 0 × 0 × 0

0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

0

We concluded that 89 × 0 = 653 × 0 = 2249 × 0 = 93 × 0 = 0

Property 5 : Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition

The sum of two numbers times a third number is equal to the

sum of each addend times the third number.

a × ( b + c) = (a × b) + (a × c)

Example : Solve : 16 × (18 + 8) = (16 × 18) + (16 × 8)

Solution : We first solve,

16 × (18 + 8) = 16 × 26
= 416

Now, (16 × 18) + (16 × 8) = 288 + 128

= 416

We concluded that 16 × (18 + 8) = (16 × 18) + (16 × 8).

This is known as Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition .
