Equivalent Decimals
Equivalent decimals are exactly what the name sounds like, decimals that are equal. For
example, 0.1 (one tenth) is equal to 0.10 (ten hundredths).
Let’s take a look at model given below to understand equivalent decimals in a better
way.
0.1 or one tenth = 0.10 or ten thousandths

From the model, it is clear that 0.1 is equal to 0.10. That is because, each tenth has
been broken up into ten equal parts.
And if we break the hundredths into ten equal parts, then we will have 0.100 (one
hundred thousandths) which also equals 0.1.
Like and Unlike Decimals
The decimals having the same number of decimal places are called like decimals and
the decimals having different number of decimal places are called unlike decimals .
Steps to convert unlike to like decimals are :
« First, determine the number of decimal places in each decimal number.
« We take the number with the greatest number of decimal places.
« We make the other decimal numbers with the same number of decimal places by
adding extra zeros to the right of the last number till we get to the greatest
number of decimal places.
