P. 101

Example : Convert the decimal number 15.6, 4.76 and 13.234 into like decimals.

            Solution : 15.6 has one decimal place.

                          4.76 has two decimal places.
                          13.234 has three decimal place.

            Here, the greatest number of decimal places is three.

            Now, we will add zeros to the extreme right of the last digit of decimal part of each
            decimal number so that each decimal number has 3 decimal places.

            15.6 has 1 decimal place, we will add two 0 after 6 and so, 15.6 is written as 15.600
            4.76 has 2 decimal places, we will add one 0 after 6 and so, 4.76 is written as 4.760

            13.234 already has three decimal places.

            Now, 15.600, 4.760 and 13.234 are like decimals.
            Comparison of Decimals

            Decimal numbers are compared in the same way as other numbers by comparing the

            different place values from left to right. We use the symbols <, > and = to compare
            decimal as shown here.

                                    Comparison                          Meaning

                                    0.2 > 0.15           0.2 is greater than 0.15.

                                    0.15 < 0.2           0.15 is less than 0.2.

                                    0.2 = 0.2            0.2 is equal to 0.2.

                                    0.15 = 0.15          0.15 is equal to 0.15.

            While comparing two decimals, it is helpful to write one decimal number below the
            other in the place value chart. This is shown in the example given below.

            Example  :  Which is greater, 0.34 or 0.331 ?

            Solution : Let’s compare these decimals using a place value chart.
