Subtraction of Decimals 13.43 cm
Subtraction of decimals is carried out in a similar way. We line up the decimals
vertically, take extra zeros to the right and subtract downward.
Following are the steps for subtraction of decimals:
Step 1 : Convert to like decimals.
Step 2 : Line up the decimal points.
Step 3 : Subtract in each place value.
Step 4 : Regroup wherever necessary.
Example : Subtract 14.214 from 34.91.
Solution : Subtracting decimal numbers is just like subtracting whole numbers.
Step 1 : Write the bigger number on top and the
3 4 . 9 1
smaller one below such that the decimal
– 1 4 . 2 1 4
points are in the same column and the
digits having the same place values are
in the same column.
3 4 . 9 1 0
Step 2 : Convert them into like decimals.
– 1 4 . 2 1 4
Step 3 : Subtract the numbers.
Step 4 : Put the decimal point in the result
directly under the decimal points of the
3 4 . 9 1 0
given decimals.
– 1 4 . 2 1 4
\ 34.91 – 14.214 = 20.696
2 0 . 6 9 6
