            Division of Decimals

To divide decimals, you will once again apply the methods you use for dividing whole

            numbers.

            Division by 10, 100, 1000
            Study the following examples :

                                 1 4 8 8 1 8
            1. 4 ÷ 10 = 4 × = = 0.4. 2. 0.8 ÷ 10 = ÷ 10 = × = = 0.08.
                                10 10 10 10 10 100

                   Ones Tenths Ones Tenths Hundredths

                     4 ÷10 8 ÷10

                                  4 8

               4 ones ÷ 10 = 4 tenths = 0.4 8 tenths ÷ 10 = 8 hundredths 10 ÷ 0.8 = 0.08

Dividing a decimal by 10 moves the decimal point one place to the left.

              E.g. 0.09 ÷ 10 = 0.009

                                    1 6 56 56 1
            3. 6 ÷ 100 = 6 × = = 0.06. 4. 5.6 ÷ 100 = ÷ 100 = ×
                                  100 100 10 10 100
                                                                       56
                                                                  = = 0.056
                                                                     1000
